Washington plays Michigan in the College Football Playoff national championship game on Monday, with the Huskies looking for their first national title since 1991 and the Wolverines going for their first since 1997.

Both teams are in their first CFP title game. It will be only the third time that a pair of 14-0 teams have met. The Huskies have won 21 straight games, including each of the last 10 by 10 points or less. The Wolverines lost in the CFP semifinals the last two years and are the first Big Ten team since Ohio State in 2015 to reach the final.

Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is the Heisman Trophy runner-up and the first player to throw for 4,500 yards in back-to-back seasons since Texas Tech’s Patrick Mahomes in 2015-16. He passed for 430 yards and two touchdowns in the 37-31 semifinal win over Texas.

The Michigan vs Washington showdown for the CFP National Championship is set to be played on Monday. Both teams have remained undefeated this season and will now be looking to be crowned as the best team of 2023-24.

The Michigan Wolverines three-peated the Big Ten Championship by defeating the Iowa Hawkeyes 26-0 in December. With a 13-0 campaign in the bag following this victory, they secured a berth in the playoff and won the Rose Bowl against Alabama.

On the other hand, the Washington Huskies won their first Pac-12 championship under second-year coach Kalen DeBoer. This guaranteed them a spot in the playoff and thwarted the Texas Longhorns 37-31 in the Sugar Bowl.

The Michigan Wolverines and Washington Huskies face off Monday in the College Football Playoff National Championship game and one team will come away with its first national title in decades. The Wolverines (14-0) have claimed 10 national championships, their most recent coming in 1997, when they shared the title with Nebraska. The Huskies (14-0) won their only title in 1991, when they beat Michigan 34-14 in the Rose Bowl and split the title with Miami. The teams last met in 2021, a 31-10 Wolverines victory in Ann Arbor. Michigan defeated Alabama 27-21 in overtime Monday to earn its title shot, while Washington beat Texas 37-31.

Monday's kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. The Wolverines are 4.5-point favorites in the latest Washington vs. Michigan odds via SportsLine consensus, and the over/under for total points scored is 56.5. Before making any Michigan vs. Washington picks, you need to see whom Mike Tierney is picking, given his track record of strong picks in games involving the Wolverines.

Tierney, the veteran sportswriter whose work has appeared in The New York Times and Los Angeles Times, has covered college football of all levels for decades. In addition, Tierney has an excellent read on the Wolverines, going 14-5 on his past 19 college football picks against the spread in games involving Michigan. Anyone who has followed him is way up.

This is the first time in the CFP era that two undefeated teams have faced off in the title game and both carry intriguing narratives heading into the biggest game of the season.

Michigan had to deal not only with the fallout of the sign-stealing scandal but the weight of the fact that its two previous trips to the College Football Playoff ended in utter disappointment. But behind star running back Blake Corum, and arguably its deepest roster in years, the Wolverines finally got to the championship game.

Meanwhile, Washington, which now owns college football’s longest winning streak, was doubted every step along the way. But behind the arm of Michael Penix Jr., the Huskies have passed every test.

Yet the biggest test lies ahead in the form of the Michigan defense, which is arguably the best in the country. And sportsbooks are giving that defense the edge, with the Wolverines currently listed as favorites.
